oh i do, do i?

March 4th, 2009 at 03:58 am

Just checked my facebook account. I had updated my status to something about the house, can't remember, anyway and I got a comment on the status from a girl I went to school with, (whom, but the way, I have not seen in person since 2002). Her comment?

Congratulations, you deserve it! Allah shines down on you.

Ok, apart from the religious ... stuff... (I am use to it - she's a recently converted muslim and seems to want to ram it down everyones throats with a healthy serve of smiles and sunshine) the one thing that REALLY REALLY REALLY irks me is, how can she possibly know I deserve it? This mindset totally baffles me. You don't deserve something unless you WORK for it, in my books. She wouldn't know if I'd earned it, because I haven't seen her in 7 + years.

It's just not her I am mad at. Don't get me wrong, I know she is just being nice.

But honestly... there are so many people out there that say that to me. And I can't possibly think of anything to say to them back, I can't think of the proper reaction I am meant to have. How can you seriously tell a person they deserve to buy a house? It has absolutely NOTHING to do with deserving-ness.

We will see in 20+ years. When we have succesfully paid off our house, then I will be able to tell myself I deserve it.

Yeah, isn't it funny how people use the word "you deserve it" as an add on when a simple "congratulations" will do.

Well, people that truly know you and know that you have saved for the house know that you do deserve it. But those that don't know you can't possibly know! People today think that they "Deserve" everything just for being!

Ha! Back in the 1970's in the USA, Loreal cosmetics ran a campaign for hair dye in which a woman smugly declared that she used only "the most expensive hair coloring in the world....because I'm worth it." At the time this commercial made us gasp and laugh at the idea of deserving a wee box of hair dye. The commercial was controversial. Everyone knew about it. Comedians joked about it and folks made fun of it....We've come pretty far in what we believe we deserve.

Here, there is a contingency of people who think that their God materially rewards people with whom he has a loving relationship. I think the concept is called something like 'prosperity gospel."

Lately I keep thinking, maybe the meek are, indeed, getting ready to inherit the earth.

I think it's just one of those colloquial well-meaning phrases that, when you think about it, doesn't apply much. I've seen people get up in arms about "You're so lucky" (because it's not luck) and even "How are you?" (because people don't really want an answer most of the time). I try to recognize colloquialisms for what they are; polite, but often not well-thought-out, pleasantries.
