dammit!

February 25th, 2009 at 01:53 am

I just got charged an annual fee on my rewards CC - the one I will be cancelling once everything settles with the mortgage (ie. in a week...!).

I completely blanked on the date (yes, even though it's on the front of the card).

I just paid $48 to learn the hard way, remember when your fees hit.

BLAH!

Oh well. Now I will have to try EXTRA hard to makeup for it this year. I now have to find out a way to save (or earn and redeem rewards for) the $395 package fee for the mortgage AND the $48 card fee from my old CC card.

You might try asking them to remove the fee before you cancel it, giving the reason that there are many rewards cards that don't have an annual fee. It can't hurt to try!

I agree that it is worth trying to have them remove fee.

its different in australia - there aren't any cc's with rewards programs that are free.

Er . . I feel your pain? It wasn't even a rewards card. It was a card I took out a long time ago, and kept meaning to cancel - because of the annual fee. I *really* was going to cancel it this year - but then I couldn't log in, so I thought they'd closed it on me due to no activity. Nope. Got charged the annual fee + a late fee because I generally don't open any of the letters from them since I don't even keep the card in my purse. Lesson learned - card will be closed after this next cycle.

I would cancel it as well, I refuse to pay a company to use their cards. In AU there aren't cards that don't offer a fee, I would still call or see if they would at least reduce the fee
    Good luck
