ring, ring, ring...?

May 25th, 2009 at 06:45 am

So, I have begun the hunt for an engagement ring.

I've left it rather last minute seeing as we had an idea last week to announce the engagement at our housewarming party. I know it's possible, but I don't want to really announce it without a ring. It's a bit of an anti-climax.

And yes, I know we've both been slack. I just didn't know where to start, so I never actually started... Frown

And yes, I also know that the boy is meant to go and get it and bring it to me, but we are really not very traditional in that sense. I think he would rather leave it to me so he doesn't have to worry about it. He will come with me to get it and try it on, but I already know he doesn't have time during the week to do anything other than work. And while they have work, they should be working! Especially in 'these times'.

So I have called two jewellers who I have heard good things about, and am already over it. $1800 for a plain band? not including the gem?

*sigh*

To be honest, the lady that quoted me that price was super helpful, and explained the differences between cast and handmade etc.
I am going to go in and have a look at the second place, as they have a wide range that are already made, and they said they have quite a few with sapphires. (what I am after)

Any tips?

No tips, but good luck! I like sapphire or blue topaz for an engagement ring. I too would prefer to pick it out myself, but my boyfriend is pretty adamant about surprising me with one.

Well the only tip I have doesn't do you much good if you need it fast: Ebay! I wish we had gone that route. We could have spent a lot less. DH's $300 wedding band sits in a box because he gained too much weight to wear it. He happily wears the $14 titanium band I bought him on Ebay.

I do like your choice of sapphire! Smile

    No tips- but good luck.

I picked out my own ring too. There wasn't much element of surprise which is how I liked it. Big Grin

I just bought a sapphire ring online (blue) as a graduation gift, and there were many beautiful options under $200 US. That is with a real stone (though not enormous) and a white gold band. Amazon and Overstock.com were both helpful- ended up getting one from the second site. Jewelry stores have insane margins. And congratulations!

    Really happy for you!

I personally think that engagement rings should be a surprise. Even if the guy screws it up and got the wrong size. After the surprise, you can always get it properly re-fitted.

That said, I'm glad to hear that you're so easy to work with. That's sure as heck better than dealing with someone who insists that everything be done for them perfectly. I don't think I can handle someone like that.

Me a dh went together looking at rings and I thought I was clear about the one I wanted but It wasn't the one he brought. So good move picking out your own ring. you have to wear it you want to be happy.
