eating out of the pantry

May 15th, 2009 at 07:46 am

So, I have decided to make next week "Eating out of the Pantry Week". I will still buy lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, but my aim is to clear as much out of the freezer, fridge and pantry as I possibly can. Why? Two reasons:
The first reason is, to save money. I'll save money by using up things and being creative, and by not buying things for meals I have planned, but rather making things out of what I have.
The second reason is, I am one of those rather odd people that like to empty their pantry and then restock it again, all fresh and new (with the same things). It's something I actually look forward to in a way. Weird? Yes.

Anyway. So one of the days I am going to eat some lentil dal I froze in single servings for myself, and will make DF a beef and red wine casserole in the slow cooker. I have most of the ingredients for this, just not the fresh vegetables. I am not sure what else I have in the freezer (I think I may have a pasta sauce I made from scratch as well), but I am looking forward to being inventive this week!

Does anyone else do this? What are some great recipes you've 'discovered' when being creative with cooking and cooking from what you've got?

no i haven't tried this, but it sounds like a good idea. maybe i'll take inventory today, buy what i need and give it a try.

I am the same way. I hate clutter. I hate pantry clutter. My tastes change all the time and what I buy right now might not be what I like eating in 6 months. So I eat it all immediately.

Do you keep some things on hand for emergencyies? Do you plan ahead to keep three to five days worth of easy or no cook food and water on hand in case stores and shops are closed and you can't buy anything?

ummmm...I dont. Debtfree- that is all way to responsible and sensible. In the event of an emergency I figure we can live off flour or whatevers around. I figure we'll have bigger things on our mind than whether we like our dinner.

UGH! I think i take my work to seriously. I love working in emergency preparedness and try to get everyone to put together a list of items needed in an emergency and items to keep them and their families safe. I think it is even more important now that you have bought a house.

maybe i need to write a series of blogs or posts on this topic: how to do it cheaply, with time to prepare, what to include, how to do it safely etc......

debtfreeme- I think it would be a great idea to write about that! I have some things ready for an emergency but I know I could improve. I would love to know how to do it cheaply and I bet others would too.
