quick! advice on buying an over-coat...

February 17th, 2009 at 03:32 am

I've been wanting (key word here) to buy a proper over-coat for a few years now. Every time I go to buy one, there's never any around as I don't think about it until the middle of winter when it's freezing; and most smart people have already gone and bought theirs.

Anyway. So I have had a little bit of a look, and I've found one that I like, and it's $89.95. (I was expecting to pay at tops, $100)

So I am thinking I should probably hold back on buying it, atleast until I look around a bit more. I have two gift cards totalling $70, but it's for a different store to the one with the coat. I haven't looked at the store where I have the gift cards yet. So I suppose I should just do that...

*sigh* I just don't want to miss out on buying a coat this year. Winter is about... two months away? Three? anyway, that's not the point. The point is that I have been meaning to buy a coat like this (long sleeved, collared, button up, about knee length, ) for a while now. And I guess I have gotten a little excited because winter stock is just coming out.

Also, I wanted to ask:
What is some advice on buying a coat? I've never owned a really good, proper one before - I usually just try to skimp by on cardigans and jumpers (makes for some uncomfortable nights out, I assure you!)
What should I be looking for?
How tightly should it fit?
What should I wear when 'shopping' for a coat?
How long are the sleeves meant to be? (as in, where should they fall when your arms are straight down?)
What colours do you recommend? I'm only buying one. I normally wear black clothes, so I was thinking either grey or or a dark ash-grey, or black.

Be sure whatever coat you buy is good quality. A good lining is also important.

I do not know how cold it gets where you live, but I like wool coats. Warm, looks good, and lasts a long time. I prefer buttons, not zippers, but that is a personal choice. The sleeves should be full length, hitting at the wrist (not bracelet length).

Wear what you normally wear. As for fit, whatever is most comfortable for you. You want it to fit over sweaters but not be very loose. I also like pockets (holds my gloves!)

I have two coats: both wool, one grey and hits about the knee, the other brown and hits just below the top of my pants.

I think a coat in black or grey or brown would be best.

I love coat shopping! Have fun.

Wool is great, but if you're only going to have one coat, I would choose a material that is water-resistant. I, too, prefer buttons. If a zipper goes, there goes the whole coat. Buttons are easy to replace.

A good coat is an investment, so I wouldn't worry too much about the price -- think more about the value.

My advice is to sit down when you try it on...I had one coat I loved except when sitting. It was double breasted, with a knotted belt and heavy wool, sort of a military style. But when I sat down it insisted on unbuttoning at the bottom and splaying open all the way up to the belt. Another coat (or two or three) would not give me good flexibility around the shoulders so that when I had to carry something in front of me (such as a stack of books) the coat would ride up uncomfortably off the shoulders. That lack of should flexibility also feels to be a problem when driving the car. I'd often end up taking off the coat to drive in order to feel like I had adequate dexterity....So sit and lift your arms when you try on coats you like. Look for a certain amount of suppleness.

    thanks for the tips guys
i will be getting buttons - i like them much better. i will consider wool - but where i live it does not get *very* cold that often - it dips below zero degrees celcius only a handful of days over winter.
sitting down and driving is a good one i hadn't considered - thankyou everyoneSmile
