market vs fruit store

January 3rd, 2010 at 06:53 pm

My posts have been dwindling the past few months, but I am going to attempt to post more in January.

December totals will be up soon. Unfortunately I already know we spent more than we earnt last month - my broken car window tipped us over the edge.

Groceries are still high, on average almost $20 more per week than what I am wanting to spend. I have decided that I will trial buying fruit and vegetables from a store near us. The past few weeks I have gone there as the farmers markets have been closed (due to christmas and new years), and have spent roughly the same amount, or less, than at the farmers market. And the fruit and vegetables are the same: organic & freshly picked. The store owns several large farms and grow their own produce. They are kind of a local secret around here, always have been well priced. I never went as I liked going to the markets, but lately it seems like a drag going to the markets on a Saturday morning.

So I will see how that goes. Who knows, maybe our grocery bill will decrease a little?

It's back to normal at work today and from now on - no more holidays, super busy days or public holidays. Which is kind of nice, it means constant money, but also it was nice having time off too!

Can your area sustain any fruit trees or vines without irrigation? I encourage you to get them started this year if possible. A dwarf apple will bear fruit in about four years from planting. You can ignore trees and vines a lot more than vegetables in a garden, and still get incredible bumper crops.

Do you use cash only for buying groceries? If not, you might try that. It certainly helps us keep the spending down.

joan: we have a passionfruit vine going, and some tomatoes at the moment, as well as herbs. we are both incredibly lazy sometimes so i will bear that in mind when planting vegetables Smile thanks for the tip!

denise: i don't really like carrying cash around, and we also use our credit cards for rewards points, so to pay for anything other than what is neccesary with cash would be losing valuable points. i'm not the type to overspend simply because i'm paying with credit either, and a lot of the time i buy things in bulk that are on special - if i only took the cash i planned to spend, i wouldn't be able to buy extra tuna, rice etc etc.
