meal plans are good in theory...

November 17th, 2009 at 05:03 am

but I find that I hardly ever stick to them. Sometimes I just don't feel like eating anything I've planned on, and other times I have a brainwave and try something different with the ingredients I already have.
Plus I've noticed since the weather has been heating up, all we ever really feel like is 'cold' food, like salad, tortilla wraps, pita breads or rice paper rolls.

Tonight, however, we are having pizza. We haven't had a takeaway dinner nearly two months (!) and it's cheap pizza night tonight, $5 each.

I have really been enjoying making Indian curries in the slowcooker, however. I don't know if I mentioned, my dad bought me a whole heap of spices when they were visiting. So I have been getting into making different mixes.

So, even though meal plans don't seem to be working for me, I am hoping to cook an indian curry to have with cous cous two nights this week, and a potato and leek soup.

Meal planning is hard, especially when you like to be flexible. I like to have a basic meal plan on hand, yet keep just-in-case frozen meals in the fridge for those nights I don't feel like I thought would when I planned on Sunday.

We did meal planning and once a week shopping for awhile...and found that we were buying too much food and it was going to waste.

I think we'll try it again soon though, this time with a more realistic picture of what and how much we eat.

I sympathize completely. Meal planning way in advance does not work for me because I eat based on whim. My idea of meal planning nowadays is making sure I have the basics stocked (which are all capable of making a variety of meals) and having some simple ready to go meals available (cut veggies and dip, canned soup, dried pasta, etc.)

At first it was hard for us, because we were used to eating whatever we wanted (usually restaurant or carry-out food). Plus we have very different palates and three different diets (pesco-veggie, regular vegetarian and vegan).

But at this point we're so used to it that I'd feel lost without my menu. We do have flexibility--if we're tired and have a complicated meal planned, we'll switch that out with an easier day, or even get delivery once in awhile and move one of our meals that doesn't have time-sensitive foods to the coming weekend.

It's great too because we generally know who will be cooking which meals, so we can check the menu and know if we have that task to do or if we can relax before the meal.

However, if you're still using all the ingredients and not wasting food, your way sounds just as good! For us the point was only buying what we needed, and then not wasting it by letting it go bad. It's saved us a ton of money.

Yeah, that's a good point. Meal plans really are really, really hard for me.

thanks for the input guys. it is hard for me because i do *love* lists. but then it frustrates me that I don't stick to them, hehe. hardly any food goes bad with us so it's not too much of an issue, i guess it's just my neurotic self feeling weird about not sticking to a list.
