have i had my head in the sand?

May 6th, 2009 at 07:53 pm

Yesterday I went shoppping with a friend. I bought a thick, red coat ($60) two thin cardigans ($42), two pairs of shoes ($25), a CD for DF $30) and that dress I mentioned ($24.95).

I am astounded by the price of things. I avoid going shopping because I don't want to spend money - so here and there I will pick up a T-shirt for $7.50 or a skirt for $10 because they have been drastically reduced in price.

But there are not many sales on now, so I had to find the best deal on fully marked clothing.

And I had already accepted that I was not planning on buying good quality clothing either. I wanted a few trendy things to go with my other clothes during winter, so I visited all the chain stores.

Holy Cow!

While I eventually found prices I was comfortable with (except the coat) I just could not believe some of the prices. I think I have not been 'shopping' for so long that I have not realised how much the prices have risen.

I do not mind paying a bit for good quality items - but these are not good quality items!

A cardigan, for $80? (I found two for $42)

Flats (synthetic materials) for $30 a pair? (I found two pairs for $25)

Chain-store, badly fitting, pants for $60?

What on EARTH?

The last I remembered, cardigans were around $30-$40 full price, flats around $15, pants around $25....at chain stores.

*sigh*

When I questioned my friend (whom I was shopping with) she didn't display any surprise at the costs. I guess it must just be me.

I think I feel the same when I look at the "full price" of just about anything any more. I always wonder who the heck pays those prices.

(& maybe no one does. I mean stores that have 24/7 sales too. That part can just be gimicky. But does anyone really believe that the $30 shirt was worth $50 in the first place?)

I rarely go into some of the more expensive stores (Kohl's, Macy's, etc.) so when I do I go into severe sticker shock. I usually shop at thrift stores and discount stores.

cassandra - Kohl's an expensive store? Check their discount racks! I LOVE buying clothes for $3 & $4!

I usually shop at the local thrift store or rummage sales. I get a real sticker shock when I absolutely have to buy something new. It's amazing we're so cheap and still have debt. Wink

For me the biggest change is how everything is so cheaply made these days. Didn't clothing used to be made to last for multiple years? I buy my husband t-shirts and I'm lucky if they make it though a whole year without needing to be replaced. And now I sound like my mom -- "they just don't make things how they used to" Smile

L Saver - You are right about the quality of things... I have some classic clothing items that are over 15 years old that I still wear (trench coat, sweaters, etc.) and I know I didn't pay exorbitant prices back then... But they were well-made and have lasted. Even the pricey items nowadays are often of inferior quality.

L saver: that too is what astounds me. i really DONT mind paying $100 or more for a GOOD coat - but i just paid $60 for a coat that i KNOW is not made well (but it is warm, and a different colour and look to my others). and I don't mind paying a lot for a really good pair of pants either, but i'm not going to pay a lot for a really bad quality pair!

i think our Myer is like your Macy's? i enjoy browsing myer because they have beatiful clothes, and i occasionally purchase some things there when i have looked around. they have great sales, where you can find surprse items reduced to under $10. but alas, no sales this time of year for me Frown
