any ideas???

February 8th, 2009 at 06:48 am

Well today was DF's sisters engagement party. It was lovely, they picked a really nice place to have it. Unfortunately I consumed a tad of alcohol and forgot to take pictures! Hopefully someone else did. The park was COMPLETELY covered by giant fig trees, so it was not hot. It would have been about 10 degrees cooler under the trees than outside. I think today it is about 37 degrees celcius.

Our gift to DF's sister and her fiance was an $80 gift card. I am thinking of making a 'pregnancy pamper' pack for her.

Anyone who has had children, what was something you would have appreciated when you were pregnant? Things that are affordable but nice, I am thinking. Like some nice teas, maybe a foot soak etc. I want to get about 7 or 8 items and pop them in a nice basket for her.

Any ideas would be appreciated!!!

Oh, and an update on 'the brother': they are only staying until tomorrow afternoon now (monday afternoon). Whew! I mean, I do love my brother. But there is only so much I can take.

Today we spent $6 on soft drink and $14 on a lined picnic blanket.

Another couple announced they got engaged today as well. I feel like we might have to wait a while to announce our engagement now. It's ok though. I think with all the house stuff, maybe it might be a good idea to keep it quiet for a few more months. Then we'll have more time to plan and save.

The "pregnancy pamper" pack is a thoughtful idea. Maybe add some aromatherapy-type body lotion... lavender is very soothing.

Some tissues in one of those cute little purse size packages for the inevitable crying jags.

A funny yet practical thing might be a sleeve or two of saltines for morning sickness.

Peppermint tea - peppermint is supposed to be soothing to an upset tummy.

Some non-slip socks, foot lotion and maybe even some toe-nail polish so brother can give her a pedicure when she can't find her feet anymore.

Found out what her cravings are and add that to the basket.EX: mine was skittles and wawa subs. So I would have loved a bag of skittles and a gift card to wawa.

My daughter used some kind of pregnancy balm to prevent stretch marks which she really liked and it seemed to do a pretty good job. A gift certificate for a pedicure. We had YD get one right before she was due, her sister took her and they had one together while I sat in the waiting room!

I think it can be difficult to give comfort gifts that you could be sure would be used, because the discomforts of pregnancy are so individual. For me, I would have kissed the hand of anyone who gave me bed pillows. Not just the belly, but changes in the connective tissues in the joints made it hard to find comfortable ways to sleep and I was forever rearranging pillows under body parts that never needed a pillow before.

Oh--for many women the sense of smell becomes heightened during pregnancy and things that previously smelled great can be too strong or downright nauseating. So scented lotions and teas might end up getting thrown out of the house.

I'd be careful with lavendar anything...it can cause premature labor. I like the body pillow. I would have liked one, too. Does that fit in basket??!!

Relaxing music. A book on pregnancy or parenting. A journal...I had lots of amazing dreams when I was pregnant. A festive/pretty water bottle...since you need to drink lots of water.

    TUMS!!!!! Seriously. LOL.

Pedicure G.C. I wouldn't set foot in one of those places BUT I was really bummed I couldn't reach my toe nails and paint them the last trimester. I think I would have gotten them done if someone had gotten me a certificate. It's not like I always have painted toes - it's the whole thing that you can't that drives you nuts!!!

creditcardfree - I've heard just the opposite about the healing properties of lavender. Here is one woman's account of how lavender prevented
Text is premature labor and Link is http://oilsforwellness.blogspot.com/2008/08/my-lavender-story.html
premature labor during her high-risk pregnancy.

I like the stretch mark cream. I think it is vitamin e oil. And the bed pillows. I was also a practical pregneant woman and enjoyed getting diapers and formula for when the baby came.

When my previous boss was very pregnant, the other ladies and I got together and get shower gifts for her based on her wish list posted at Target and Babies R Us. But we also bought her some stuff just for her - a gift certificate to a place where you can get a full treatment with pedicure, manicure, massage. She loved it, because she could not longer find her feet which were very swollen. Another idea would be to offer to bring them a homecooked meal.
